The Queen Conch is one of the most beautiful shells found in the Caribbean. Set against the blue sea - I couldn't resist painting it.

'Islands of the Bahamas and West Indies' Drawn and painted by hand. Using India ink layered with a watercolor wash in an old world style with the ports of today. (Nothing is computer generated here).

An idyllic day; the trade winds (as a cherub) gently playing with old sailing ships and Magnificent Frigatebirds, the sun setting in the Gulf, the passages marked for easy navigation, and embellished with my mermaids and sea monsters.

On one small branch in a lush rainforest, tucked between Orchids and Bromeliads, sits a beautiful Resplendent Quetzal - highlighted by the rays of the rising sun. As the early mist fades, a charming Red Eyed Tree Frog can be seen hiding under an orchid leaf.

A few of my favorite Caribbean reef fish. A Stoplight Parrotfish, Juvenal Wrasse and a brilliant Yellow-tailed Damsel, swimming with other tropical reef fish though a lush forest of bright corals and sponges.

Dolphin watercolor.
After swimming for months with my escorts, I began to have dolphin dreams, not dreams of dolphins; rather being one of them, one of the family pod: seeing the world through their eyes.

Created after cave diving with wild dolphins off the outer cayes of Belize.
The cave has a surreal and sacred feel to it, dripping with stalactites and monolithic stalagmites; ancient sculptures from a time when the cave was above sea level. In the soft light, these natural formations have the look of bearded demons.

I love the boats of ancient cultures. It's not only the style of the boats, that I find interesting, but also their purpose. They serve in daily life, and as a means of transportation for the soul through the afterlife.

One of three Mayan Gods - known as the Palenque Triad.
The first stories of the Triad begin around 3000-4000 bc. and are found through the late classic period. This one - with the Jaguar headdress leads the canoe - the Maze Paddler God usually steers from the stern.
Symbols on the paddle, canoe and tattooed on his arms, show the hieroglyphs for heaven or supreme other world.

I had a wonderful surprise early one morning as I looked up to admire my pretty tropical flower garden and Black Orchid in full bloom ...a young Jaguar curiously peering in my cabin window.

Xul - Maya Jaguar God of Thunder and Lightning

Xul (sool) the Maya God of Thunder and Lightning, is hanging from a ‘Sky Band’ that represents night. Xul is a powerful God - in the body of a Jaguar.
My interpretation of a Mayan hieroglyph of the Xul. He is one of my favorite and also appeared on my pen and ink mainland map of Belize.

My interpretation of a Mayan hieroglyph of the Jaguar. I sought to create the feeling of a painting on a stone temple wall. When I interpret a glyph or any ancient artwork (part of it is often missing or chipped away by time or vandals) I fill in the gaps using my imagination and full artistic license, while trying to maintain the essence and strength intended by the Maya people.

‘Keel-billed Toucan and the Black Orchid’ India ink and watercolor.

In the early morning, colorful toucans may be seen and heard in the rainforest areas of Central America. While you sip your morning coffee: you may see them just off the deck - eating fruit from the trees.

The beautiful Keel-billed Toucan and the Black Orchid are the National bird and flower of Belize.

Lilly, began with a dream of an old treasure chest setting on the sandy sea floor. A pretty, young mermaid named Lilly was sorting the booty and playing with the finds, while having tea with her friends: a dolphin and reef fish. Most mermaids are born with a story to tell - and some even tell me their name...

The surf edges close to a Mermaid blowing a Queen Conch Shell. As she sits on an old coral head, warm waves lap at the Starfish and Sea Urchins that surround her.

I created this map to show the mainland of Belize, the locations of the location of Maya ruins, and the wildlife found in the rainforest of Central America.

White elephants and a sea dragon protect this chart's journey. Like all my dragons, this one created himself, and the royal white elephants seemed to grow organically with the lotus flowers up the columns.

The traditional long boat I have drawn here, was tied to the coconut palm each evening, and was out fishing before dawn every morning: I sketched it while watching the sun set...

Casita del mar, sandy flip flops left on the beach, all the clothing needed - breezing on the line, that sea, the scent of frangipani and salt air, and lots coconuts and sun...

Rooster Watercolor
Mac wakes me every morning before dawn, or when a car passes, or anyone clicks on a porch light. I thought he should be painted with a sunrise, so maybe he will get the hint.

Hen and Chicks. It's all about the color!
Hens stop traffic daily in the Caribbean. Tourist stop traffic to photograph the hen and chicks - on Main Street.

So bright your eyes will water. I wanted the hot Caribbean sun in this fun, strutting Rooster.
