Ambergris Caye, Belize Nautical Chart by Savanna Redman.
This ink drawing began my love of drawing charts, mermaids, and sea monsters.

When I first moved to Belize, no maps of Ambergris Caye were available to the public. So I talked with the local fishermen to get the names of the bays and small islands surrounding the caye. One older fisherman knew I was working on a map before I'd told anyone — that's Belize. He rattled off lagoon names I hadn't found anywhere, then handed me a fresh snapper filet and said, "Once you drink the water here, it will be home in your heart, always." He wasn't wrong.

For the bird's-eye detail, a commander in the RAF procured a satellite map of the area for me. I like the style of old maps — but I prefer accuracy, where we were diving and sailing. I used my artistic license in the lagoon and mangrove areas up the west coast, where the mangroves are a web of canals that look solid from space but aren't. Those channels were cleared to harbor ships during storms — and cut by pirates to hide their ships. Many are in use today for birdwatching and spotting American crocodiles.

Richard L. Woods — Richie to friends — was a marine biologist turned local historian who provided the information I needed on the old merchant ships and schooners that once plied the waters off the coast, and loaned me reference books listing known shipwrecks along the reef. The two scrolls drawn center left record some of that history.

I was so into the history of the caye that I drew this map with a crow quill pen and India ink. Modern tech pens seemed taboo.

This was 1993. No internet, no Google Maps, no online art supply stores. Just a crow quill pen, a cooler of art supplies, in a thatched-roofed casita with a sea almond tree that grew up through the mahogany plank floor and out the roof.

I'm forever grateful to my friends: the fisherman, the marine historian, and an RAF commander who helped me create this special map of the place I still think of as home.
