The Legend of the Blue Hole – Hand-Drawn Sea Monster Art – Archival Print
The Legend of the Blue Hole
Or Mysteries and Legends of the Blue Hole.
Ink Drawing
This drawing began as a day scene with a sun — but as my sea monsters often do, it evolved into something unexpected. The moon and deep shadows pulled the waves into a baroque-inspired motif, creating a night scene filled with mystery and myth.
I usually can't explain where these creatures come from; they emerge from the depths of my subconscious, often surprising me with their ornate style. However, when this drawing changed, I remembered a day I had been diving on a friend's boat out at the Blue Hole, resting between dives, listening to the guests chatter about what lives — or lurks — at the bottom of the hole and in the caves. There are often schools of sharks, but the divemaster hinted at something more mysterious in the darkest depths that he swore had been glimpsed on night dives. Like a storyteller sitting beside a campfire, he had captivated the guest.
So when 'The Sea Dragon' turned dark and the moon came up, I had to rename him The Legend.
