Maya Jaguar Paddler God – Silk Painting – Stretched Canvas Giclee
Jaguar Paddler God
Serti Technique on Silk
My interpertation of one of three Maya Gods - known as the Palenque Triad.
I created the original painting using the Serti Technique on Silk. 24" x 30"
The first stories of the Triad begin around 3000-4000 bc. and are found through the late classic period. This one, with the Jaguar headdress, leads the canoe. The 'Maze Paddler God' usually steers from the stern. Symbols on the paddle and canoe and tattooed on his arms show the hieroglyphs for heaven or supreme Other World.
When I first moved to Belize, I simply wanted to include a few beautiful pictographs in my paintings and know their meanings. That led me to an Archaeologist living and working in the country who loaned me reference books, and soon, I became hooked on the artwork and hieroglyphs of the Maya people. It was the beginning of a lifelong hobby, and like many things, the more I learn, the more I realize that there is so much more to learn. I painted the Jaguar Paddler God with my favorite glyphs in my own style. The glyphs are: Fresh New Earth, Sun, Earth, Jaguar, and Sunrise.
Special orders:
There were too many options to list in the dropdown menu. I try to keep it simple. But... :)
Matte Canvas Options: If your print will be displayed in an area with direct, bright light or canned lights, where the glare from a glass-covered print would be too much to see the image, the matte canvas finish is the solution — same beautiful archival color but with a matte non-glare finish. At checkout, simply add a note requesting the Matte Finish. The price is the same.
Stretcher bar options #1: If you plan to frame the stretched canvas, .75" deep stretcher bars can be special-ordered to fit in the rabbit of the frame.
Stretcher bar options #2: If you prefer a beefy profile, the 2.5" deep bars will do the trick. These are especially nice where you want a bold profile, visual balance, and added support for larger canvases.
No Stretcher bars #3: Rolled canvas prints are available for those who want to handle the framing themselves and for oversized custom prints. These ship in a sturdy tube.

Custom Sizes: I've listed the most popular sizes that can be shipped flat with UPS, but larger prints, in-between sizes, and rolled prints (unstretched) are available if you need a specific size to fill a space perfectly. This print is a 4:5 Ratio.

Size/Space/Tip
Visualizing art filling a specific space on the wall can be tricky.
An easy way to see if the size of the print you are considering fits your wall space is to cut a piece of poster board to size and tape it to the wall to see if it is what you need.
If the print is on stretched canvas, it is ready to hang. However, a print on paper needs a frame, so you'll need to add inches to the width and height of the posterboard mockup to accommodate mating and framing. Example: A narrow one-inch wide frame with a standard 3-inch wide mat around the artwork would add 8 inches to the width and height. So a 15"x20" print would be 23"x28" when hung.
